歴して其楽を窮む故に多年撿閲す
る所の草木其性質奇異なる者を摸

より官途に在て蛍雪の労を積に遑

其差升を挍訂せは幸これより大なるは

賞せずにはいられない。そこで草木を我が友として庭園に植え育て、我が師として花瓶や甕に活けて貯え、これを師とし事として、その間に遊び憩うといえども、いまだ深い思いを十分に伸び広げるには足りない。そこで山林や藪沢を巡り歩いて、その楽しみを極めた。ゆえに、長年にわたって検め見てきた草木のうち、その性質が奇異なるものを模

写して「性譜」と名付け、あわせて有毒草木の図説を編み集め、その末尾に付け加えて、我が仲間の初学者たちを諭すこととした。しかしながら、不才の私は早くから官途にあって、蛍雪の労を積む暇もなかったため、文辞の粗末さや杜撰の罪は論じるべくもない。後の君子がその漏れ落ちたところを補い修め、その誤りを校訂してくださるならば、これより大きな幸いはない。

One cannot help but admire them. And so I have made plants and trees my friends, cultivating them in the garden, and made them my teachers, keeping them in vases and jars. Though I take my ease and diversion among them as my guides and companions, it is still not enough to fully give expression to the depth of feeling I hold within. Thus I have traveled through mountains, forests, thickets, and marshes to pursue these pleasures to their fullest extent. Therefore, of the plants and trees I have examined and observed over many years, I have made sketches of those with remarkable and unusual natures,

and titled the work *Seifu* ("Nature Record"). Together with this, I have compiled illustrated explanations of poisonous plants and trees, appending them at the end, so as to instruct the young beginners among my companions. However, as I, untalented as I am, have been engaged in official duties since my early years and have had no leisure to accumulate the painstaking labors of diligent study, the crudeness and carelessness of my writing cannot be excused. Should a gentleman of later times supplement and correct the omissions and errors herein, there would be no greater fortune than this.
