この歌の心は、人に知られまいと忍びに忍んでいるけれども、忍びきれずに早くも「物思いをしているのか」と人も問うほどに表情に現れてしまったと驚いて詠んだものである。これは天徳の歌合の歌である。歌の意味は明らかである。「心を守ることは城郭のごとし」と言われているが、それでも随分私は固く忍んでいると思っていたのに、人が不審に思うことによって、それほどまでに思い弱られているのかと心に嘆いて言っている様子は、最も情趣深い。○季注に曰く、「色に出でにけり」と言うので、それにしても表情に出てしまったよと驚いている意に聞こえる。

この歌の心は、恋をしているという私の名前は早くも立ってしまったことよ、人は決して知るまいと忍んでいたのに、私は知らず知らずにその様子も見えてしまったのかということである。天徳の歌合で前の歌と対になった歌である。「恋すちょう」は「恋をするという」ということである。「まだき」は「早い」ということである。○祇注では後の歌（この歌）の方が少し勝っているという趣旨を述べている。本当に言葉遣いは類いないものである。詠歌一体では前の歌を褒めている。○季吟が言うには、思い初めてからそれほど時間も経たないのに早くも評判が立ってしまったことよ。人知れず思い初めたけれども、思いの深さゆえに早くも現れてしまった心よ、と聞こえる。

The meaning of this poem is: though I tried to hide my feelings from others by enduring patiently, I could not endure completely, and so quickly my expression revealed my state that people even asked "Are you troubled by something?" This expresses his surprise at this situation. This is a poem from the Tentoku poetry contest. The meaning of the poem is clear. It is said that "guarding one's heart is like a fortress," yet even though I thought I was hiding my feelings quite firmly, when people became suspicious, I lamented in my heart, "Have I become so weakened by these thoughts?" This manner is most deeply moving. ○The Ki commentary says that the phrase "showed in my expression" conveys the sense of surprise: "So my feelings did show in my expression after all!"

The meaning of this poem is: My reputation as someone who is in love has already spread so quickly! I thought people would never know as I kept it hidden, but unknowingly, my condition must have become visible to others. This is a poem paired with the previous one in the Tentoku poetry contest. "Koisucho" means "that I am in love." "Madaki" means "early/quickly." ○The Gi commentary states that the latter poem (this one) is somewhat superior. Truly, the use of language is unparalleled. In "Eika Ittai" the previous poem is praised. ○Kigin says: How quickly my reputation spread when not much time had passed since I first fell in love! Though I began loving in secret, because of the depth of my feelings, my condition quickly became apparent—this is how it sounds.
