契りきな
互いに
袖を
絞りつつ
末の松山
波越さじとは
【右頁上】
この歌の「末の松山」は奥州の名所である。○「君を置いて浮気な心を私が持ったなら、末の松山を波も越えるだろう」という本歌から詠んだものである。「互いに」は「お互いに」ということである。この歌の本来の謂れは、この山を波が越える時、私の約束は変わるだろうと言ったことがあり、皆それによって詠んだ。心は、それにしても浮気でこのように変わりやすいものを、お互いに袖を絞りながら「波は越すまい」と約束したことよ、と少し恥じ入るように言った心である。「契りきな」は「契ったなあ」ということを詰めた（強調した）ものである。

この歌の心は、あなたを思い初めてからただ一筋に逢い見たいとばかり嘆いていたが、一夜逢ってから別れの朝より、逢わない昔と別れた後の辛さを比べると、なるほど昔は物思いもしないようにに思われた、なお思いが増した心である。また、「忍ぶ」ということが加わるほどに、逢わなかった以前は物思いするまでもなかったということである。また、思いの初めには姿かたちをも見ないだろうかと思い、面影を見ては言葉を交わそうと思い、次第に思うことが積もったのである。この歌は易しく聞こえるけれども、その心の深い歌である。

In this poem, "Sue no Matsuyama" is a famous place in Ōshū (northeastern Japan). ○This poem is based on the original poem: "If I were to harbor a fickle heart, abandoning you, then waves might even cross Sue no Matsuyama." "Katami ni" means "mutually" or "both of us." The original legend of this poem tells that when waves cross this mountain, my promise would change—everyone composed poems based on this story. The meaning is: What a promise we made about such fickle, changeable things—both wringing our sleeves with tears, vowing "the waves shall not cross!"—spoken with a somewhat ashamed heart. "Chigirikina" is an emphatic form of "we made a promise."

The meaning of this poem is: Since I first began thinking of you, I lamented with the single desire to meet you, but after spending one night together, comparing the old days when we hadn't met with the pain after our parting morning, indeed the old days seem like I had no cares at all—my feelings have grown even stronger. Also, as the element of "enduring in secret" is added, before we met there was nothing worth agonizing over. Moreover, at the beginning of love, I wondered if I might catch a glimpse of your form, and seeing your image in my mind, I thought to exchange words with you—gradually my thoughts accumulated. Though this poem sounds simple, it is a poem of deep feeling.
