この歌について、小式部は和泉式部の娘である。大江山、生野、みな橋立への道である。橋立は丹後の国にある。「まだ踏みもせず」とは、まだ行って見たことがないという意味である。また母の手紙の意味も含んでいる。このころ母は離れて丹後の国にいたためである。これは小式部が歌をうまく詠むのは母が詠んで送ってくるのだろうなどと疑う人がいて、小式部の袖を引いて「歌合でも歌は、もう橋立から来ているのか」と言った時に、とっさにこの歌を詠んだということである。

この歌は一条院の御時に、奈良の八重桜を人が持参した際に、この女房が御前にいたので、その花をお渡しになって歌を詠めとおっしゃったので詠んだということである。さて心は、古い都の桜の花の色も香りも、今このみやこに参上しては一段と優れて、八重桜が九重に美しく咲いていると賞賛した当座の言葉で、まことに素晴らしい。内裏を九重というのにかけて、桜の色と香りを兼ね、また「今日この辺り」という意味も含めて言ったのである。

Regarding this poem, Koshikibu was the daughter of Izumi Shikibu. Mount Ōe, Ikuno—all are on the road to Hashidate. Hashidate is located in Tango Province. "Have not yet set foot" means have not yet gone to see it. It also includes the meaning of her mother's letters. At this time her mother was separated from her and living in Tango Province. This refers to when someone suspected that Koshikibu composed poems so well because her mother wrote them and sent them to her, so they pulled at Koshikibu's sleeve and said "At poetry competitions too, have the poems already come from Hashidate?" She composed this poem spontaneously in response.

This poem was composed during the reign of Emperor Ichijō when someone brought double-petaled cherry blossoms from Nara. Since this court lady was present before His Majesty, he gave her the flowers and commanded her to compose a poem, so she composed this. The meaning is that the color and fragrance of the cherry blossoms from the ancient capital have become even more excellent now that they have come to this capital, with the double-petaled cherries blooming beautifully in the nine-fold palace. This is an impromptu expression of admiration, truly splendid. Playing on the fact that the imperial palace is called "nine-fold," she combines the color and fragrance of the cherries while also including the meaning "today, in this place."
