この歌の心は、この僧正が大峰へ入った時、この山の様子は人の足跡というものが全くないだけでなく、草木までも見慣れず心細い中で、ただ桜の咲いているもとに立ち寄り、「この花よりほかに知るものはない中で、花もまた私よりほかに愛でる人はいないだろう。すれば花も私も、もろともにしみじみと思うよりほかない」と詠んだのである。このような高貴な身分でありながら、この深山に入って珍しく桜の花を見た時の様子を、よくよく思いを込めて理解すべき歌である。

この歌の詞書に「二月頃の月の明るい夜、二条院にて人々多く夜を明かしていたところ、周防内侍が横になって『枕がほしい』と密かに言うのを聞いて、大納言忠家が『これを枕に』と言って腕を御簾の下から差し入れたので詠んだ」とある。心は、短い春の夜の夢の間ほどの手枕をして、そのかいもなく無駄に浮き名が立つのは残念なことである。ゆえにその手は枕にしがたいということである。

The heart of this poem: when this high priest entered Mount Ōmine, the state of this mountain was such that not only were there no human footprints at all, but even the plants and trees were unfamiliar, making him feel lonely. Standing by where the cherry blossoms were blooming, he composed: "Apart from these flowers, there is nothing else that knows me, and the flowers too have no one other than me to appreciate them. Therefore, both the flowers and I can only feel this pathos together." Being of such noble status yet entering this deep mountain and seeing the cherry blossoms in such an unusual circumstance, one should deeply contemplate the scene when understanding this poem.

The preface to this poem states: "Around the second month, on a bright moonlit night, when many people were staying up all night at Nijō-in, Suō-no-naishi lay down and whispered that she wanted a pillow. Hearing this, Dainagon Tadaie said 'use this as a pillow' and extended his arm from under the curtain, whereupon she composed this poem." The meaning is: using an arm-pillow for just the brief span of a spring night's dream, it would be regrettable for a scandalous reputation to arise meaninglessly and uselessly. Therefore, that arm is difficult to use as a pillow.
