幾夜寝覚めぬ
須磨の関守

この歌の心は、寂しい須磨の浦に旅をして宿泊し、夜中に目を覚まして千鳥の声を聞いて堪えがたく思うにつけて、このような所の関守などは何夜も夜中に目を覚まして千鳥の声を聞いて堪えがたく侘しく思っているだろうと、私の旅宿での仮寝よりも、いつもそこに住み慣れた関守のつらさを思いやった歌である。須磨の浦は源氏物語にも「海人の家でさえもまれになん」と書かれている。私の一夜の旅寝でさえこのようであるのだから、関守の心はさぞかしということである。

この歌の心は、秋風が雲を吹きなびけて照る月が隠れているが、折々その雲の隙間より月影が差し出るのは、晴天の景色よりも一層明らかなように思われるということである。この歌は面白い所がないようであるけれども、実にそのとおりで、ありのままに打ち出した所、心も言葉も優雅にして、また余情もある歌である。

The heart of this poem: Staying overnight while traveling at the lonely bay of Suma, waking in the night and listening to the plovers' cries, finding it unbearable—thinking of this, the poet reflects that barrier guards in such places must wake many nights listening to the plovers' voices, finding it unbearably melancholy. This is a poem where the poet sympathizes with the hardships of the barrier guard who lives there permanently, compared to his own temporary night's lodging while traveling. Suma Bay is described even in the Tale of Genji as a place where "even fishermen's houses are few and far between." The meaning is: if even my single night of travel lodging is like this, how much more so must be the barrier guard's feelings.
