この歌は逢った後の朝、その人に贈ったものである。「長からん」とは黒髪の縁で、今朝別れて又いつを待とうかということに寄せて詠んだのである。黒髪というところから「乱れて物を思ふ」と言ったのである。「長からん」は人の心を指して言い、「乱れて」は私の心を指して言っている。「さぞ長からん心も知らず」とは、行く末にかけて契ったことも、人の心は変わりやすい習いなので、末はどうなるかも知らず、今朝の別れのつらさを思い乱れておりますということである。○季吟の注に曰く、「今朝」の字は後朝の意味が明らかである。

この歌の心は、ほととぎすを待つ頃、幾夜かつれなく過ぎたのに、ようやくにして一声を夢かとばかり聞きもあえず、その行くべき方の空を眺めれば、ただ有明の月のみがあって、ほととぎすは早くも姿もないと言っている。ほととぎすの歌は巧みなものが多いけれども、これはただ技巧を凝らして言わず、しかも心を尽くした所、余情が限りなくある。

"How long will last" uses the image of black hair as a metaphor, expressing the sentiment of parting this morning and wondering when they will meet again. From mentioning "black hair," she says "in disarray, I think." "How long will last" refers to the person's heart, while "in disarray" refers to her own heart. "I do not know how long your heart will last" means: though we pledged our love for the future, since people's hearts are by nature changeable, not knowing what the future holds, I am in emotional turmoil over this morning's painful parting. ○Kigin's commentary states: The character "this morning" clearly carries the meaning of "the morning after."

Though there are many skillful cuckoo poems, this one does not rely on elaborate technique, yet it expresses deep emotion with limitless lingering sentiment.
