田子の みれば 雪は
浦に 白妙の ふりつゝ
うち出て ふじの高ねに
田子の浦に立出てみればふじの
たかねには白ききぬなどのやうに 山部

をく山にもみぢ 声聞時ぞ
ふみわけなく 秋は
しかの かなしき
哥のこゝろはすべて秋の
けしきはものがなしさ
ものであるがその中にも 猿
おひ〳〵すゑになりて 丸
もみぢもちりしきてある
おく山にてそのおちばを
ふみわけてなく鹿のこゑを
きく時分がまことに
ものかなしき最上で 太夫
あるといへる也
現代語訳
【右丁】
田子の浦にうち出でて見れば白妙の
富士の高嶺に雪は降りつつ
田子の浦に立ち出て見れば、富士の
高嶺には白い絹などのように
真っ白に雪が降り積もって、さぞかし
高い山であることよ、ということである。
田子の浦は駿河の国にて、富士川の裾野の海辺
である。これは前夜に泊まった宿
から この浦へ立ち出て富士の山を
見て詠まれた歌
であろう。

奥山に紅葉踏み分け鳴く鹿の
声聞く時ぞ秋は悲しき
歌の心は、すべて秋の
景色は物悲しい
ものであるが、その中でも
深く奥まった山になって
紅葉も散り敷いてある
奥山にて、その落ち葉を
踏み分けて鳴く鹿の声を
聞く時分が、まことに
物悲しさの最上で
あるということである。

"Going out to Tago Bay / And gazing forth, I see / White hemp robes— / Snow falling constantly / On Fuji's lofty peak"
Going out to stand at Tago Bay and looking forth, on Fuji's lofty peak, snow has fallen and accumulated pure white like white silk, and what a truly high mountain it is. Tago Bay is in Suruga Province, at the seashore at the foot of the Fuji River. This poem was probably composed when the poet went out from his lodging of the previous night to this bay and gazed upon Mount Fuji.

"In the deep mountains / Treading through fallen maple leaves / The crying deer's / Voice I hear—then / Autumn is most sorrowful"
The meaning of this poem is: All autumn scenery is melancholy, but among such scenes, in the deep, remote mountains where maple leaves have scattered and lie thick, when one hears the voice of deer crying as they tread through those fallen leaves, that is truly the supreme moment of autumn melancholy.
