初霜のおき の花
白菊の花をよめる哥也心は初霜が

折る事ではないと也菊の花は秋

現代語訳

山里は冬ぞ寂しさまさりける
人目も草も枯れぬと思へば
冬の歌である。
心は、山里はいつということもなく寂しいものであるが、冬になれば訪ねて来る人も来なくなり、草なども枯れて格別に寂しさが増すということである。人が訪ねて来ないことを「人目枯る」といえば、それを草の枯れると一つに詠みなしたものである。

心あてに折らばや折らん初霜の
置きまどはせる白菊の花
白菊の花を詠んだ歌である。心は、初霜が降りて庭の草葉はみな真っ白になり、菊の花に紛らわしくて、どれが菊やら見分けられないので、当て推量で菊はこのあたりに咲いていたかと思って折るならば折りもするであろうが、なかなか見分けて折ることではないということである。菊の花は秋の末から冬まで咲いているものゆえ、このように詠んだのである。「置きまどはせる」とは、霜が降りて花と見紛うようにすることをいう。

This is a winter poem.
The meaning is: mountain villages are always lonely, but in winter the loneliness becomes particularly intense, as people who used to visit no longer come, and the grasses wither away. When we say that people no longer visit (hitome karuru - "people's eyes wither"), this is combined with the literal withering of grass in a single poem.

Trusting to chance, shall I pluck them?
The white chrysanthemum flowers
that the first frost has made so bewildering.
This is a poem about white chrysanthemum flowers. The meaning is: the first frost has fallen and all the grass and leaves in the garden have turned pure white, making it difficult to distinguish them from the chrysanthemum flowers. Since I cannot tell which are the chrysanthemums, I think to myself that the chrysanthemums should be blooming around here somewhere, and if I were to pick them I could do so, but it is quite difficult to distinguish and pick them properly. Chrysanthemum flowers bloom from late autumn through winter, which is why the poem was composed this way. "Oki madowaseru" means that the frost has fallen and makes things look confusingly like flowers.
