しのぶれど色に出にけり
わが恋はものや思ふと
人のとふまで
これも恋の哥なり
こゝろは は恋をすると 平兼
いふことを人にしられまいと
つゝみかくすやうに 盛
すれどもそのつゝむにあまる
恋しさに何ぞ物思ひが
あるかと世間の人が
とふくらゐに顔色に
あらはれしといへる也

恋す まだき 人しれずこそ
てふ 立に
わか名は けり 思ひそめしか
歌の心はわが恋をもるといふ名が
早く立たことかな世間の人の 壬生
いかゞしてしりたることぞまた
わがおもふ人にさへいひ出しも 忠
せず心ひとつに思ひそめた
ものをと也恋すてふとは
恋するといふといへる事まだきは 見
早くといふに
おなじことなり
現代語訳

しのぶれど色に出でにけり
わが恋は物や思ふと
人の問ふまで
これも恋の歌である。
心は、恋をするということを人に知られまいと包み隠すようにするけれども、その包むに余る恋しさに、何か物思いがあるのかと世間の人が尋ねるほどに顔色に現れてしまった、ということである。

恋すてふわが名は
まだき立ちにけり
人知れずこそ思ひそめしか
歌の心は、わが恋を漏らすという名前が早くも立ってしまったことだなあ。世間の人はどうして知ったことだろうか。また、わが思う人にさえ言い出しもせず、心ひとつに思い始めたものを、ということである。「恋すてふ」とは「恋をする」ということを言った事。「まだき」は「早く」ということと同じである。

The heart of the poem is: How quickly the reputation that reveals my love has spread! How did the people of the world come to know? Moreover, I haven't even spoken of it to the person I love, but began loving with my heart alone. "Koisu tefu" means "to be in love." "Madaki" has the same meaning as "hayaku" (early/quickly).
