朝ぼらけ宇治の 瀬々のあじろ木
河霧たえ〴〵にあらはれわたる
是は冬の頃宇治へ行給ひて川辺の
けしきをよまれし哥也心は 権中納言
宇治は山や川のけしきのよき所である
か夜のあける時分に見わたせば川の
こゝの瀬に立てあるあじろ木が霧
にあらはれて來るけしきはいふに
いはれぬと也宇治は山城にて京の

木をいくつもたて氷魚をとらゆ 定頼

うらみ 袖だに こひにくちなむ
わび ある 名こそ
ほさぬ ものを をしけれ
恋の哥也
こゝろはつれなきひとを人を
うらみあぐんでその泪にいつも 相模
かわく間のなき袖は朽てゆくが
此袖のくちるさへつらいに
まだそのうへに恋をすると
世間にいはれて
名もつひにはくちはてるので
あらうがそれがとりわけ
をしき事ぞとなり
現代語訳
【右丁】
朝ぼらけ宇治の川瀬々の網代木に
川霧絶え絶えにあらはれわたる
これは冬の頃、宇治へ行かれて川辺の
景色を詠まれた歌である。意味は
宇治は山や川の景色の良い所であるが、
夜の明ける時分に見わたすと、川の
ここの瀬に立ててある網代木が霧の中に
あらわれて来る景色は言葉では
言い表せないほど美しいということである。宇治は山城国で京の
[判読困難]所である。網代木とは川の瀬に
木を幾つも立て、鮎を捕らえる
ものである。
【左丁】
恨みわび干さぬ袖だに恋にくちなむ
名こそ惜しけれ、あるものを
恋の歌である。
心は、つれない人を
恨み嘆いて、その涙にいつも
乾く間のない袖は朽ちていくが、
この袖の朽ちることさえつらいのに、
まだその上に恋をしていると
世間に言われて、
名もついには朽ち果てるので
あろうが、それがとりわけ
惜しいことであるという意味である。

At daybreak on the River Uji,
The fishing stakes appear intermittently
Through the lifting river mist on each rapid.
This is a poem composed when [the poet] went to Uji in winter and viewed the riverside scenery. The meaning is:
Uji is a place with beautiful mountain and river scenery. When one looks out at daybreak, the fishing stakes standing in the various rapids of the river appear through the mist - this scenery is so beautiful it cannot be expressed in words. Uji is in Yamashiro Province, [unclear text] of the capital. Fishing stakes (ajirogi) are structures made by placing many wooden posts in river rapids to catch sweetfish.

Though I lament and grieve, my sleeves never dry,
Yet even if they should rot away from love,
It is my reputation that I most regret losing.
This is a love poem.
The meaning is: Lamenting and grieving over a heartless person, my sleeves are always wet with tears that never dry, and they will rot away. Even though the rotting of these sleeves is painful, what is even worse is that people will say I am in love, and my good name will ultimately be ruined - and that is what I find most regrettable.
