一条天皇の后である上東門院が「珍しい草紙はございませんか」とお尋ねになったので、 八丁口画 広重画
女官たちが紫式部に清書させて差し上げることにした。
式部は石山寺に籠もって観世音に
祈っている折しも、八月十五夜の月が湖水に
映って心が澄み渡るままに、まず
須磨明石の巻を書き始めた。
最初は藤式部と呼ばれていたが、若紫の巻が
特に優れて書かれていたので、それより
紫式部と言うようになったということである。

the court ladies had Murasaki Shikibu make a clean copy to present to her.
While Shikibu was secluded at Ishiyama Temple praying
to Kannon, on the night of the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the moon
reflected on the lake water, and as her heart became clear,
she first began writing the Suma and Akashi chapters.
Initially she was called Fujishikibu, but because the Wakamurasaki chapter
was particularly excellently written, from then on
she came to be called Murasaki Shikibu.
