なげゝとて月やは かこちがほなる
ものをおもはする 我涙かな
是は月前恋といふ題にてよまれし
哥なり月前恋とは月のまへにて人を 西

露も はに 秋の夕暮
歌のこゝろは深山はいつも物さびしき

なる秋の夕暮そとりわけものさび 師
しきことぞと也
真木とはたゞ木の事にて真の
字は木をほめてほめていふそへものなり
深山のけしきをありのまゝに
よくよまれし歌なり
現代語訳

嘆けとて月やは物を思わするかこちがほなる我が涙かな
これは「月前恋」という題で詠まれた歌である。月前恋とは月の前で人を恋い慕う心を詠むことである。これは「嘆け嘆け」と言って月が私に物思いをさせるのだろうか、そうではない。月を見れば恋しい人のことが我が心より思い出されて物悲しくなるのに、月が物思いをさせるように、愚痴がましく涙のこぼれることよ、という意味である。

村雨の露もまだ干ぬ真木の葉に霧立ち上る秋の夕暮
歌の心は、深山はいつも物寂しいことであるが、村雨が降り通した後の露もまだ乾かない木々の葉に霧が立ち上って、ほの暗くなる秋の夕暮れは、とりわけ物寂しいことよ、という意味である。
真木とはただ木のことで、「真」の字は木を褒めて言う添え字である。
深山の景色をありのままによく詠まれた歌である。

Should I lament because the moon makes me melancholy? How reproachful are these tears of mine!
This is a poem composed on the theme of "love before the moon." "Love before the moon" means composing about one's feelings of longing for someone in front of the moon. This means: "Lament, lament" - does the moon make me melancholy? No, it does not. When I see the moon, memories of my beloved arise from my heart and I become sad, yet I tearfully blame the moon as if it were making me melancholy - how reproachful this is!

On the leaves of the trees where dewdrops from the passing shower have not yet dried, mist rises in the autumn evening.
The heart of this poem is: while deep mountains are always melancholy, the autumn evening when mist rises from the leaves of trees where dewdrops have not yet dried after a passing shower, becoming dimly dark, is especially melancholy.
"Maki" simply means trees, and the character "ma" (真) is an honorific prefix added to praise the trees.
This is a poem that well captures the scenery of deep mountains just as it is.
