市。路歴鹿沼。晩入壬生城。乙未到于古河城。晩入于岩築城。丙申還
著江戸。戊戌詣増上寺。告于 皇考也。

よろこびやすきはじめのそれの月（つき）それの日（ひ）
東照大権現三十三 回（くわい）の神忌（しんき）にあたれりとかや天（あめ）が下（した）ゆすりて
ひゞきのゝしるされば日光（につくわう）の宮（みや）にて八講（はこう）おこなはるべき【平出】
のりありて前摂政殿下（さきのせつしやうでんか）をはじめ奉（たてまつ）りおもと人（びと）のかぎりあかち
つかはすさは等持院贈左相府（とうぢゐんぞうさしやうふ）追薦（つゐせん）のためしならし 院（ゐん）の御製（ぎよせい）は
かの毘沙門堂大納言（びしやもんだうのたいなごん）の古（こ）富【？】いおぼしめし給（たま）ひて霜（しも）のたて露（つゆ）の
ぬきはたばりひろくおりなせるにしきの御心（みこゝろ）くまなくかきあら
はしぬるぬひものゝ御（おん）くちたくみにめぐりてたまきのはしなき
がごとし是（これ）や若蘭（にやくらん）が手玉（てだま）もゆらにおりはへけむことの葉（は）もいか

馬屋路（うまやぢ）の鈴（すゞ）の声（こゑ）もさながら花（はな）をもりがほなるに其（その）名残（なごり）もあはれ

市を出発した。路は鹿沼を通った。夜に壬生城に入った。乙未の日に古河城に到着した。夜に岩築城に入った。丙申の日に
江戸に帰着した。戊戌の日に増上寺に詣で、皇考（家康公）に報告した。

喜ばしいことに、安らかな始まりのその月その日、
東照大権現三十三回の神忌にあたるとかで、天下がゆすぶられて
響きが騒がしいので、日光の宮にて八講が行われるべき
法令があって、前摂政殿下をはじめとして重要人物の限りが派遣される。これは等持院贈左大臣（足利義満）追善の例に倣ったものであろう。院（後水尾院）の御製は
あの毘沙門堂大納言の古い詩を思し召しになって、霜を経糸に露を
緯糸にして、はたを広く織りなした錦の御心を余すことなく書き表し
た縫い物の御口調に巧みに巡って、玉の輪の始終がないような
ようである。これこそ若蘭が手玉も揺らに織り重ねたであろう言葉もどの

ように美しく見えることよ。私も人並みに其の
数に連なって、木曾の麻衣をはるばると思い立った私も、麒麟の尾の
さばえが千里を駆ける心地がするであろう。大海に船を渡し、山に
かけ橋をして行く手の道も辿々しくない。正しい命を伝える
駅路の鈴の声もそのまま花を守るような顔をしているので、その名残も哀れに
知られて、都を立ち出たのは過ぎた弥生の二十日あまり一日の日
であろうか。それからこの卯月三日にようやく烏羽玉の黒髪
山に到着した。その道中、これほどの名所を過ぎて口ずさんだ
漢詩や大和歌の言葉が煩わしいので省略する。すべてこの山はもと
満願権現の地であって、補陀洛山と名付けた。およそ勝道上人が登ること
三度にしてはじめて寺を営んだ。よって神宮精舎とする。

How joyful, on that peaceful beginning month and day,
It being the 33rd memorial service for Tōshō Daigongen, the realm was shaken and
resounded with noise, so there was a decree that Eight Lectures should be held
at Nikkō Shrine, and from the Former Regent on down, all important personages were dispatched. This followed the precedent of memorial services for Tōji-in, the posthumously appointed Left Minister (Ashikaga Yoshimitsu). His Majesty's (Emperor Go-Mizunoo's) imperial composition
recalled the ancient poems of that Great Counselor of Bishamondō, using frost as warp and dew as
weft to weave a broad brocade, expressing the imperial heart completely, and the
skillful oral tradition of this embroidery circulates like an endless jeweled ring.
This must be like the words that Jakuran wove with swaying hand-jewels, but how

beautiful they appear! I too, joining their
ranks like anyone else, having resolved to journey far in Kiso hemp robes, feel as though the
saba flies of a qilin's tail were galloping a thousand ri. Crossing ships over great seas and building
suspension bridges over mountains, the path ahead is not difficult to follow. The sound of bells on the correct life-transmitting
post roads also seems to guard the flowers, and knowing the poignancy of their traces,
I departed the capital on the twenty-first day of the past third month.
From then, on the third day of this fourth month, I finally arrived at Ubatama no
Kurokami Mountain. Along that journey, having passed so many famous places and composed
Chinese and Japanese poems, the words became tedious so I omit them. This entire mountain was originally
the site of Mangankongen and was named Mount Fudaraku. Generally, Saint Shōdō climbed
three times before first establishing a temple. Hence it is called Shingū Shōja.
