能往観者。則曰善容須弥於芥子

ところが、植田子夏がまた『日光山志』の編纂を行った。かつて彼の著作『武蔵名所図会』に序文を書いた縁で、今度も後書きを依頼された。その書物は単に古い出来事を探し求め、昔の話を集めただけでなく、新しい図版があり、珍しい説もある。地を縮め土を転じて、世の中のまだ見たことも聞いたこともない人々に、一読でその勝景をすべて尽くして見せるものである。そこで昔の習性が再び芽生え、魂が動き神が飛び立った。

そこで一言述べることにした。この書物は専ら実際に行って観ることができない者のために作られたのだろうか。それとも将来行って観ようとする者のために作られたのだろうか。実際に行けない者にとっては、芥子の中に須弥山をよく収めているということになる。将来行こうとする者にとっては、霊宝の在り処によく導いてくれるということになる。杜甫が「人間長見画、老主恨空聞」と詠んだように、私もこのことについて長年思いを巡らせてきた。そもそも日光の
