現代語訳
三郎平はこの島に愛想が尽き、別の島へ行こうと待っていると、波に乗って帆掛け船がやって来た。どこの国も同じことで、旅人が通るのを見て、お定まりの酒手（心づけ）を要求する。この男はさすがに棒の熟練者と見えて、二人ともに取って投げ、腹へ棒を突き通す。三郎平は後ろの穴から覗き見る。無愛想な奴らだ。

二人刺すのを「すき焼き刺し」、五人を「団子刺し」という。

ひとつの島へ上がってみると、浜辺に女の草履がおびただしく並べてある。さてはこれが聞き伝えた女護の島か。草履を履いてみたいが、裸では格好がつかないので恥ずかしくて隠している。やはり二つ良いことは成らないもの。
まずこの草履はどうであろうか。中抜き草履は親敷きと浅黄広うとの三枚裏付け。どうやらこれは美しそうだ。やわらかい黒は通がかなう。すべは縄は大歳島下りの雪駄は、施主持ちの縮緬の鼻をも当てにはならず、五枚裏付けだが、買いやがるものもある。なんと高いか知らぬが、気が揉める。

英語訳
Saburō-hei, having grown tired of this island, waits to go to another island when a sailing boat comes riding on the waves. Every country is the same - seeing travelers pass by, they demand the customary tip (gratuity). This man appears to be quite skilled with the pole, taking both men and throwing them, piercing their bellies with the pole. Saburō-hei peeks through the hole from behind. What surly fellows they are.

When he climbs onto one island, he finds women's sandals arranged in great numbers along the beach. Could this be the legendary "Island of Women" he had heard about? He'd like to try on the sandals, but being naked, he feels embarrassed and hides himself, as it wouldn't look proper. Indeed, you can't have two good things at once.
First, how about these sandals? The nakamuki sandals have parent soles with light yellow broad straps and three-layer backing. These seem quite beautiful. The soft black ones would suit a connoisseur. The smooth rope ones and the setta from Ōtoshi Island, even with their silk nose straps that the sponsors provided, can't be relied upon - they have five-layer backing, but there are those who would buy them anyway. I don't know how expensive they might be, but it's worrying.
It's like dreaming within a dream.
