生を失ひたる花形なれハ予さへいふかしと
貝懐ふなれハ被閲し給ふ君あらハ嘲笑のミ
信用無ハ必定ならん疑義あらハ荒岡の備
開を證とし給へかし同し花菖蒲なれ
とも其雲泥せる事譬禽獣に麟鳳
あり亦ハ行潦と河海とを見競に
比としかゝん哉

現代語訳
生来の特性を失った花形なので、私でさえ説明が困難だと
心配しているのだから、これをご覧になる方がいらっしゃれば、嘲笑されるだけで
信用されないのは必定であろう。疑問がおありなら、荒岡の実際の
開花を証拠としてご覧いただきたい。同じ花菖蒲であっても
その差は雲泥の違いがある。これは鳥獣に麒麟や鳳凰が
あるようなもの、またはにわか雨の水たまりと大河や海とを
比べるようなものである。

Since these flower forms have lost their natural characteristics, even I find them difficult to explain and worry about this. Therefore, if there are those who view this work, they will surely only mock it and give it no credence. If you have doubts, please take the actual blooming at Araoka as evidence. Though they are all hanashōbu, the differences between them are as vast as clouds and mud. This is like having qilin and phoenix among birds and beasts, or comparing a temporary puddle with great rivers and seas.
