野夫児女にいたるまてめてつるもの
花なりたゝち男のありしとき
百花を好ませられ遂にやしなひ
眺もあかすほいせられしに宦事の
身にして培養のこゝろへべくもあら
されは余も同しく好める心より
其労を助たりきたゝち男の世を
去り給ふ後も猶花にあかす殊
花あやめとなん名つけたる一品社
実に芸をやしのふ友と親愛侍れは
萌芽の形状には架て筌定し
暮春の頃よりその花目前にみるか
如く夏来て咲る花と花とは我を
してあかさるなか菅の根の
長き目を忍しめ萋したる羨は
風に靡ておのつから納涼の興をそへ
葉生へにむすふしら露の散玉舟に
月影をやとしいつしか秋も暮
ゆきて朝早くの淡霜に枯葉の
さまに名残を思ひ固窓に炉を
現代語訳
野人や女性に至るまで愛でるものは
花である。父が生きていた時、
百花を愛好され、ついに栽培し
眺めることに飽きることがなかったが、官職の
身であって栽培の心得もあまりなかった
ので、私も同じく好む心から
その労苦を助けたのであった。父が世を
去られた後も、なお花に飽きることなく、特に
花菖蒲と名付けた一品種は
実に技芸を慈しむ友として親愛しているので、
萌芽の形状によってその性質を予想し、
晩春の頃からその花を目前に見るが
如く、夏が来て咲く花と花とは私を
して飽きることがない。菅の根の
長い年月を忍耐させ、茂った葉は
風になびいて自然と納涼の興趣を添え、
葉先に結ぶ白露の玉が舟のように
月影を宿し、いつの間にか秋も暮れ
ゆいて、早朝の薄霜に枯葉の
様子に名残を思い、固く閉ざした窓辺で炉を

from common folk to women, all cherish
flowers. When my father was alive,
he loved all kinds of flowers and finally cultivated them,
never tiring of gazing upon them. However, being in government service
and not having much knowledge of cultivation,
I, sharing the same fondness,
assisted him in his labors. Even after my father
departed this world, I still never tire of flowers, especially
a variety I named "hanashōbu" (Japanese iris),
which I truly cherish as a friend in the art of cultivation.
I predict their characteristics from the form of their sprouts,
and from late spring I can see their flowers as if
before my eyes. When summer comes, the blooming flowers
never fail to captivate me. Making me endure
the long years like sedge roots,
the luxuriant leaves sway in the wind, naturally adding
the pleasure of cool evening breezes.
White dewdrops forming on the leaf tips like jeweled boats
harbor the moon's reflection, and before long autumn passes
away, and in the light frost of early morning, in the appearance
of withered leaves I contemplate what remains, by the tightly shut window with a hearth
