ひらき冬籠してまたくる春に
もへいてん事を待たのしさいふ
はかりなし此はなの培養
九牛か一毛得る所あるに似たれは
一小冊に杜撰を綴り題して
花菖蒲培養録といふみるもの
好事を笑ふへきなれとも真に
花を好の君子ならは我毫言に
あらさるをしらん

現代語訳
開いて冬籠りして、また来る春に
萌え出ることを待つ楽しさは言う
ばかりもない。この花の栽培は
九牛の一毛を得るような成果があるようなので
一小冊子に雑文を綴り、題して
花菖蒲培養録という。見る者は
好事家の笑い種だと言うかもしれないが、真に
花を好む君子ならば、私の拙い言葉が
粗末でないことを知るであろう。

英語訳
opening and hibernating through winter, then waiting for
the new growth to emerge in the coming spring—the joy
is beyond words. The cultivation of these flowers
yields results like obtaining one hair from nine oxen, so
I have compiled rough writings into one small booklet, entitled
"Record of Japanese Iris Cultivation." Readers might
dismiss this as the folly of a dilettante, but if one is truly
a gentleman who loves flowers, he will know that my poor words are
not without merit.
