燕子花に類して葉尺長く花亦相似て
三英六英色往々に変し夏時にひらけり

予の先人百花を好れて天明の夏三とせ
余りし信州所生の花あやめなるものを
培養あらせしか実生悉親草に同して

世に花菖蒲と呼ばれるものがある。その形状は
杜若に似て、葉は一尺ほど長く、花もまた似ており、
三弁花や六弁花があって色もさまざまに変化し、夏の時期に開く。
宿根性で翌年もまた花を咲かせ競い合う中に、実生の
新しく生まれるものがあって、かつてない珍しい花を咲かせる。
私の先祖は様々な花を好み、天明年間の夏、三年
余りにわたって信州産の花菖蒲なるものを
栽培されたが、実生はことごとく親株と同じで
変わった花は咲かなかったので、丹精込めた甲斐がないとして
後には怠るようになった。その頃、伊予国松山の某という人が

There is something called hanashōbu (Japanese iris) in the world. Its form
resembles kakitsubata (rabbit-ear iris), with leaves about one shaku long, and flowers that are also similar,
having three or six petals with colors that vary in many ways, blooming in summer.
Being perennial, they compete in flowering again the following year, and among them are those grown from seed that
produce new varieties, yielding unprecedented rare flowers.
My ancestor loved various flowers and during the summers of the Tenmei era, for three
years and more, cultivated what were called hanashōbu from Shinshū,
but the seedlings were all identical to the parent plants and
no unusual flowers bloomed, so thinking the painstaking effort was in vain,
