(Continued from the previous page) — The two or three officials inspected each shrine building, standing before them one by one. The shrine officials (shashi) and ujibito (shrine-affiliated persons/clan members) gathered to meet them, and although various matters were of a sacred and secret nature (shinpi), given that the commissioners (bugyō) were making inquiries, they reported the details of each building one by one. Among the shrine officials (shashi) present were: the head priest (kannagi/kannushi), Takahisa; the senior priest (shōnegi), Mochiisa; and the Kibune negi, Tokuhisa. Among the ujibito were: Seiji, Ujitaka, Ujiaki, Ujimori, Shūken, Shigenobu, Hoji, Nao, and others. Among the shrine monks (shasō), Jōshōbō Shōyu, Gakugakuin, and others attended.
Beginning from in front of the Kataoka Shrine, the officials proceeded to inspect each building in turn — the Hosodono, Hashidono, Kyōsho, Ko-kyōsho, Tsuchiya, Goshonya, Chōya, Goryōya, Nieden, Jingūji, Yuya, and others — examining each one with regard to whether the roofing was of cypress bark (hiwadabuki), shingle (kokerabuki), or tile (kawarabuki), and also scrutinizing the pillars as to whether they were knotless or knotted, as well as the ceilings, and so forth. The deputy (gedai) of the master carpenter (odaiku) Yamato-no-kami, one Gonemon, served as scribe, recording everything in writing, after which they departed. The shrine community (sōchū) then offered them a round of drinks (ikkon).
1. The twenty-sixth day. Overcast. A divination document (kanmon) regarding the auspicious date and time for the column-raising ceremony (hashira-date) of the Wakamiya was submitted by the yin-yang diviner (onmyōji) Naizen (Munekatsu [in red ink]). A copy thereof was received by the shrine community (sōchū).
2. The twenty-eighth day. Clear skies. Yesterday, Lord Gomi dispatched two zassho (administrative assistants/clerks) — Mori and Matsushita — as his messengers. The substance of their message was that all significant (ariwake) shrines, shrine buildings, halls, and temple structures should be entirely rebuilt in the course of this year. For this reason, as there were various matters requiring attention in connection with this project, a request came for representatives to present themselves. Accordingly, four persons — Takahisa, Mochiisa, Shūken, and Suefuki — went to meet them today. Furthermore, taking this opportunity, they raised the matter of a petition (soshō) concerning the expenses for the jisai (ground-purification ceremony, or jichinsai) for the Wakamiya and Shingū —
