(Continued from the previous page) The shogunate's (kubō-sama's) chief carpenter, Yamato no Kami, and the master carpenter (tōryō), Chikugo no Kami, led the procession as usual. At the appointed time, nine carpenters arrived (comprising both the senior [shō] and deputy [gon] carpenters and five others, totaling nine men; the adults wore eboshi caps with formal kamishimo and hakama, and each brought along six or seven apprentice boys); two smiths (Izumi, accompanied likewise by apprentices; dress as above); two cypress-bark roofers (hinoki-kawa, dressed as above during the adze ceremony [chōnabajime]); two plasterers (same individuals as during the adze ceremony, dressed as above) — in total, workers of these five trades presented themselves for duty. Next, the dimensions and count of the timber were measured and delivered to the overseers (bugyō) of the timber yard. Next, the overseers summoned the local carpenters, and six or seven timbers were brought into the timber yard. The apprentice carpenters (teko), fourteen or fifteen in number each, applied their adzes and smoothed the surfaces of the timbers. Furthermore, using a marking board with a metal ink-line (kane-hakari), ink lines were drawn on one timber, which was then handed from the carpenters to Yonosuke, the sawyer (kihiki). Yonosuke received it and carried it into the timber yard, where it was sawn. Next, the works overseer (sakusho bugyō) took his seat in the transverse seat (yokoza) facing south, wearing an eboshi cap and hunting robe (kariginu), seated upon a tatami mat. Next, once the timber-shaving was complete, all parties took their seats (the seating was arranged by the treasurer [suitō] in three rows on long floor boards): To the west: the senior chief carpenter (shō daiku), senior master carpenter (shō tōryō), Sakubei, Santarō, and Shinshirō — these five were seated facing east, in order from north. In the center: the deputy chief carpenter (gon daiku), deputy master carpenter (gon tōryō), Sasuke, and the deputy chief carpenter's son — these four were seated facing west, in order from north. To the east: two temporary smiths (kari kaji), two cypress-bark roofers, and two plasterers — these six were seated facing east, in order from north. Next, a banquet (kyō) was held for these fifteen individuals, with the treasurer (suitō) serving as attendant. The treasurer wore a hakama and a short sleeveless jacket (kataginu).
