(Continued from previous page) …whether it had been handled at the timber yard — but since everything had been procured from the official kitchens of the public authorities (the bakufu) and received at a charge of six units of provisions (ryōmoku roku), the entire body of shrine members and shrine-head attendants was called upon, and the arrangements were made at the residence of Yamamoto Monden-no-shō (Yasukuni). At that time, the monthly administrators (tsukigyōji) of the shrine head were Aki-no-kami and Saemon-no-jō. In addition to these, the two zōshō (administrative officers), the satanin (dispute officials), the senior elders among the shrine lecture assembly (sha-tō kōshū), Aki-no-kami, Nakasa, Bungono-kami, and others all attended in formal white robes (jōe). The shrine priests (shashi) did not attend. Item: The twenty-fifth day. The weather alternated between cloudy and clear, with haze. From this day, the carpenters began gradually dressing the sacred timber, wearing hakama (divided skirts) and shoulder garments (katagimu). The four persons — the senior chief carpenter (shō daiku), deputy chief carpenter (gon daiku), and the two master carpenters (tōryō) — wore formal eboshi caps and kamishimo ceremonial dress and issued directions and commands (they did not perform labor themselves; all subsequent occasions follow this precedent). The five persons designated "leaders" (osa) at the time of the adze ceremony (chōnabajime) worked the timber dressed in hakama and shoulder garments. The master carpenter of the timber-sawyers, Yosuke, and the great-saw operator Kurōzaemon — these two also wore hakama and shoulder garments but were not made to work. Item: Today, at the residence of the head priest (kannushi), the shrine priests and shrine head gathered in assembly, and after deliberation, the four persons — the senior and deputy chief carpenters and the two master carpenters — were summoned, and the land allocation (jiwari) for both the Senior and Junior Shrines (shō and gon no sha) was determined. Item: [A gift was sent] to the Karasuma residence. Item: To the Chūwamon-in: kelp (one hundred pieces), sea bream (ten), and a cask of sake (諸白 morohaku, one ka).
