(Continued from the previous page) Since the jinin (shrine servants) came repeatedly to announce the festival, the shrine officials (shashi) first departed to attend the sacred rites (shinji), and thus the remaining members dispersed. After the rites concluded, word was sent out again, and at the upper quarter of the Hour of the Dog [around 7:00–8:00 PM], they gathered once more at that place for deliberation (with the exception that, later, Izumo-no-kami, Bungo-no-kami, and Uemon-no-tayū—these three—did not attend). It was not until the first point of the Hour of the Tiger [around 3:00–4:00 AM] that the matter was concluded, and everyone dispersed.
One entry: On the same day, at the shrine precinct, the trees atop the western moat and the large shii (chinquapin) trees to the east of the御局 (Misubone; ladies' quarters or a designated area near the shrine)—great trees of some three armspans in girth—were among those that were felled and replaced, and a general repair and construction project (sō-fushin) took place.
[Heading, in vermilion:] "On the Occasion of the Opening of the Sacred Doors: The Matter of Inspecting the Inner Sanctuary (naijin)"
One entry: During the Tsuchitoke Festival (Festival of the Thawing Ground) of the same month, following the opening of the sacred doors (mito-biraki), there were some seven points of uncertainty regarding the following: how many nested vessels (ireko) were in the inner sanctuary; whether there were metal fittings on the sacred cabinet (karahitsu); and the metal fittings of the hamatoko (a type of platform or flooring). A question was raised as to whether it would be appropriate to conduct an inspection at the time of the sacred door opening. When this was put to the ujibito who had gone to confer at Mori's place, the reply was that it did not appear in old records (kyūki), and as far as those things that even the chūkan (intermediate officials) had no knowledge of were concerned, it was thought that such a proceeding might well be acceptable. Upon hearing this, the decision was made to inspect the furnishings and implements that had long been stored away in the inner sanctuary.
One entry: The 1st day of the 3rd month, the day of Mizunoe-i (壬亥). The fair copy of the previous night's "meroku" (目六; a type of official document or register) having been completed, two zassho (clerical officials) of Mori and Matsu, four persons in total, carried it to Kyūi-dono's residence.
One entry: The 2nd day of the same month, clear weather. A notice arrived from Gomi-dono to the effect that the craftsmen involved in the sacred treasures (shinpō) should be brought forward by the end of the day. Accordingly, the shrine's monthly duty officer (tsuki-gyōji), Bicchū, and Ukon-shōgen—the two of them—sent word to the craftsmen's lodgings, and thereupon...
