…[they] proceeded from the First Torii gate (during this time, the Bureau of Onmyō [Onmyōryō] performed a purification ritual [harae] at the First Torii). In the meantime, the shrine officials (shakan), the deputy administrator (bettō-mokudai), the Zusho-no-kami, the Shoshi-taifu, the Ichi-no-kami, and others each proceeded via Nara Bridge, passing through the Second Torii, the Saiden Bridge, and the Tama Bridge, and arrived at the Rōmon (tower gate), where they waited for a time for the imperial messenger to arrive. When the imperial messenger reached the Second Torii, the shrine officials proceeded from the Rōmon across the bridge toward the front of the main shrine, and performed a bow (ichii-rei) in the direction of the imperial messenger. Next, the Chief Priest (kannagi) and the imperial messenger (three persons in total) took their seats at the Hashidono (Bridge Hall). The remaining shrine officials and clan members (ujibito) stood outside on the earthen floor area. Next, the deputy messenger (fuku-shi) produced the divination document (kanmon) determining the date and time for the provisional enshrinement (kari-sengū), and handed it to the Chief Priest. The Chief Priest reviewed it and returned it, and both parties exchanged a bow. Next, the deputy messenger produced the divination document concerning the erection of the pillars of the temporary auxiliary shrine (gondō), and handed it to the Chief Priest. The Chief Priest reviewed it and returned it. The bow was performed in the same manner. (The divination documents are recorded on a separate sheet.)
Next, the deputy messenger produced the divination document for the ridge-raising ceremony (jōtō) of the Gonsha (temporary shrine), and handed it to the Chief Priest. The Chief Priest reviewed it and returned it, and the bow was performed in the same manner. Next, the Chief Priest, together with the deputy administrator's representative (bettō-mokudai) and the shoshi (shrine administrators) — (as the review box [ran-bako] had not been brought, the shoshi were meant to carry it, but this matter was questionable) — proceeded via the Tama Bridge, through the Rōmon and the Tang-style door (karato) of the Chūmon (inner gate), and at the corridor, received the three divination documents, placed them before the deity, performed two prostrations (saihai), and then withdrew. They exited via the Hoguya and Watariya (covered passage), and arrived before the Tsubone (ladies' quarters/chamber). During this time, the remaining shrine officials proceeded via (a certain route through) the Kataoka Bridge, the New Shrine (Shingū), and the front of the Young Prince Shrine (Wakamiya), arriving before the Tsubone, and lined up in order together with the Chief Priest (seated facing north, with west as the honored position; the clan members viewed the proceedings from the latticed corridor [sukashi-rō] of the Tsubone). Next, the imperial messenger proceeded via the Tama Bridge and Rōmon, and viewed [the offerings] from the middle of the Chūmon area. The Chief Priest presented [the documents] and stood in formation. Next, the Chief Priest and those below performed a bow toward the imperial messenger. Next, the imperial messenger proceeded back and took a seat in the Chōya (administrative hall) (facing north, with west as the honored position; the deputy messenger was seated in the same place; the Shoshi-taifu privately arranged this. In ancient times, no one knew how to arrange the space; curtains were hung on four sides, and below the raised flooring, the imperial messenger's attendants [tsukai-zōnin] were stationed). Next, the shrine community members (shatō-shū)…
