The illustrated plan (emap) was returned. A letter addressed to Izumi-dono was also present (marginal note: the wording should be verified again, as it remains with Mimasaka).
Item: On the last day of the same month [the 1st month], the general shrine community (sōchū) deliberated and concluded that, since the order for a complete reconstruction had already been issued, it was appropriate to locate and identify the sites of former structures that had fallen into disuse. A general construction survey of the local area was undertaken, and first the site of the pagoda of the Jingū-ji (the shrine's associated temple) was cleared and its foundation stones were excavated. Solid foundation stones were still present, revealing the remains of a structure measuring seven ken on each side. A bronze ring from a wind-bell (fūrin) that had been hung on the nine-ringed finial (kurin) of the ancient pagoda, along with four or five large nails, were unearthed from the ground. On the same day, the site of the Issaikyō-zō (the repository of the complete Buddhist canon) to the west of the Kannon-dō (the Kannon Hall) was also investigated, and multiple foundation stones were found in succession. Each person present noted that it appeared to have formerly been constructed in the style of a "kakedzukuri" (a structure built on stilts or projecting over a slope). The local administrators (satanin) of this area are Kamon-no-suke, Bichū no Kami, and Mimbu-no-shō.
(Marginal note: Kei'un [or: as stated; or: sand/gravel — possibly garbled])
Item: On the 2nd day of the 2nd month [a red vertical line appears to the right of "2nd month" in the original], in order to locate the former sites of the pagoda, the Great御所 (Ōgosho), and the Small Gosho (Kogosho) within the shrine precincts, Takahisa and Yoshihisa, together with the kōshū (lecture assembly members) of the shrine, including Aki (in red: Ujishige) and Unshū (in red: Ujimasu), and the elder members, searched the sites through consultation. However, the locations could not be clearly identified. It was therefore decided that the illustrated plan should serve as the authoritative reference, and the plan was hung in the御所屋 (goshoya), after which the sites were investigated according to the plan one by one. Nevertheless, given the great length of time that had elapsed, the sites remained unclear. Still, the places that roughly seemed to correspond were designated as the former sites and marked off with rope (nawabari). The weather that morning was mild and warm, but in the afternoon the wind rose and a light snow fell, and everyone — high and low alike — stood with folded arms (i.e., was unable to do much). At that point, from among the temple community (jike), the Shūgyōbō and Gyokusen-bō —
