(Continued from the previous page) In an audience with Lord Karasuma (Karasuma-dono), (the Tensō) listened carefully to each point raised and declared that the shrine family's (sha-ke) position was altogether admirable and proper. Nevertheless, (the Tensō) stated that the Gyōjikan official should also be summoned and questioned, and dispatched a messenger accordingly; however, the Gyōjikan claimed illness (shōrō) and did not appear. Given this, (the Tensō) indicated that it seemed all the more that the shrine family's position was correct, but that nevertheless, without going through imperial deliberation (chokugi), it would be inappropriate to render a judgment — and so the reply was that the matter would in any case be reported to the Emperor (sōmon). With this, (the assembled parties agreed that) they would leave the matter entirely to the Tensō's handling, and everyone withdrew. Item: On the same day, directly from Lord Karasuma's residence, the aforementioned members of the shrine family proceeded to Lord Gomi (Gomi-dono) and conveyed the full content of the Tensō's words. (Lord Gomi) responded that since the date and time (for the ceremony) had already been set, it would be most regrettable (mottainai) for the sacred treasures (shinpō) to be delayed, and urged the matter with extraordinary urgency. He further stated that since public affairs (kuge no gosata) tend in all matters to be delayed, it would be proper to station a person (as an attendant) every day to press the matter. With this exchange, the members returned home, and it had already grown close to midnight. Item: Tenth day. 《Marginal note: Morning: intermittent rain and sunshine; evening: heavy rain; night: clear》 In the morning, a meeting (yoriai) was held at the Eidō (memorial hall). (The agenda included) Lord Gomi's reply from the previous day, as well as the Tensō's reply. Following this, the document listing the instructions (chūmon) from the carpenters (daiku) regarding the ridge-pole ceremony (mune-age) and the pillar-raising (hashira-date) was to be formally submitted that day, and it was duly presented (hirō). Also on this day, deliberations regarding the Kosashizoe (assistant coordinators) were concluded and the personnel were determined. Furthermore, the number of persons to attend the Tensō was decided. Additionally, the number of persons to attend the consultation regarding the ceremonial dress (ishō) for the carpenters' pillar-raising ceremony was determined. As for the Kosashizoe, since the deliberations had become disorderly (machimachinan) owing to the excessively large number of participants up to this point, appropriate persons were selected from among them. The written list of Kosashizoe names begins with Samanosuke and Tonomono... (continues on the next page)
