[Continued from the previous page] ...In previous years as well, the curtains were made after consultation between the Yamato [sō (presumably)] jyo and the shrine administrators (shashi) and clan members (ujibito). Ordinary curtains have viewing holes (monomi) because they are meant for people to look through, but these curtains have no viewing holes because they are meant to conceal [the sacred]. Furthermore, the loops (chi) were not made of the same cloth, but were fashioned as head-loops (kashira-chi). Even in the case of silk, he stated point by point that [the loops] should not be of the same silk [as the curtain itself]. Everyone truly marveled, saying that the oral traditions of elders are beyond criticism, and both the shrine administrators and the clan members were astonished.
Item: On the 5th day, the weather was clear. Again today, the senior ladies (jōrō) supervising the sewing of the sacred garments and the number of workers remained the same. However, today, in the name of divine grace (myōga), the wives of the clan members and others, as well as the deputies (tedai), also participated. There was [work on] the sacred garments [side note: including the hemming]. Additionally, the mother of Mochiiku [side note: name unknown], the mother of Seihei [side note: daughter of Ninokawa Dōhyō], together with the wife [side note: daughter of Takumi-no-suke Sueyuki], and the wife of the kannagi high priest Takahisa [side note: daughter of Hyōbu-shōyu Norihisa] also came and assisted with their eyebrows properly groomed [i.e., in formal appearance].
【Regarding the Matter of Yamato Brocade, Pattern, Hollyhock, Weaving, and the Raising Thereof】(Written in red)
Item: On the same day, Nomoto Dōi [red vertical mark] had woven a small amount of the standing hollyhock (tachi-aoi) pattern onto the Yamato brocade whose designated pattern was the small hollyhock (ko-aoi), and the clan members (ujibito-shū) rebuked him for this. As a result, the intermediary Mochiiku [red vertical mark] was also troubled, and through the shrine's administrative officer (zassho) sent word to the clan members in sacred vigil: "What should be done? If we have it rewoven, it cannot be completed by the 9th day — what do you advise?" However, the clan members replied that since this had passed through Mochiiku as intermediary, both the person who placed the order and the one who received it were at fault (magakoto). Furthermore, regarding what the divine will (shinryo) might be in this matter, there was nothing further to say, and with that they gave their response. Consequently, Mochiiku brought Dōi [both marked with red vertical lines] along and accompanied him to the building where the clan members were conducting their sacred vigil, and there, directly and at length, various reasoned arguments were made...
