(Continued from the previous page) Since [the gilding] had been applied thinly, it was suggested that a firm [finish] in silver would be more appropriate. The shrine administrators (shashi) and the clan members (ujibito) held a discussion, and Mochiiku [red vertical mark] and Kataken [red vertical mark] and others stated: "Since the koma-inu (lion-dog figures) are among the sacred treasures (shinpō), after the enshrined deity's transfer ceremony (sengū), they should be fine even without coloring. While the shrine itself need not undergo repairs, it is the established shrine custom (shahō) to attend to the sacred treasures in both spring and winter; and so the same should apply to the koma-inu." This was the conclusion of their deliberation. Nevertheless, those who were in the period of sacred retreat (sanrō) stated, "In any case, it would be best to have it set as it is right now," and when one of the koma-inu was returned to [the sculptors], they took it back with no recourse. Item: On the same day, there was an investigation (senkaku) into the matter of the [poor] "kaku" (cutting/execution) of the robes. The shrine administrators said it was due to poor sewing, while the senior ladies (jōrō) supervising the sacred robes said it was due to poor cutting, and throughout the night neither side could reach a resolution. Item: On the 8th day, the sky was overcast. The senior ladies supervising the sacred robes and the administrators remained the same number as before. Item: On the same day, the ridge tiles (munagarawa) of the shrine were laid. Item: On the same day, Lord Gomi arrived and, observing that the hanging koma (decorative horse figures) at the front of the shrine appeared to lack the "a-un" (阿吽, paired open-and-closed mouth) [arrangement], stated that they should be redrawn promptly. As a result, a gathering of both elders and younger members was held. [Red annotation: Regarding the Toso Byakusan (spiced medicinal powder)] Item: On the same day, Nakarai Tsūsen'in [red vertical mark] presented the toso byakusan (spiced medicinal powder used at New Year). This was placed in a willow box (yanagi-bako) [red vertical mark], wrapped with two sheets of folded paper as is customary, and affixed to the toso byakusan [wrapping]; however, the label "Nakarai [red vertical mark] Tsūsen'in [red vertical mark]" was not written on it. Furthermore, the outer wrapping was done with nakadaka danshi (a type of formal layered paper) to make a large wrapping... (continues on next page)
