Item: On the twenty-third day, the weather was clear. Today, the norito-ya (hall for the recitation of ritual prayers) was demolished. A carpenters' explanation (kotowari) was given by the craftsmen of the shūgen-ya (hall for celebratory ceremonies), and the question arose as to whether a date should be formally set, or whether construction should proceed at the carpenters' own discretion. [Red marginal note: Concerning the affairs officer (gyōji-kan) and the administration of the sacred treasures (shinpō).] Item: On the same day, Mochiiku, Nuido-no-suke, and Uemon-no-taifu went to the Transmission Official (tensō). They argued that it was unreasonable (iware naki koto) that the gyōji-kan (affairs officer) should be the one to oversee the shinpō (sacred treasures) ceremonies. In response, the tensō replied that they should compile a report based on the old records (kyūki) regarding when the shrine family (shake) had taken over the execution of these duties from the gyōji-kan. They returned, having humbly accepted this instruction. Item: On the night of the same day, a gathering (yoriai) of elders and younger members was held. A report was presented regarding the return of the messengers (tsukai) belonging to the aoi (hollyhock/Kamo hollyhock) mission—specifically the zōshō (administrative officer) and the Moku-no-jō (Junior Assistant of the Bureau of Carpentry) [red vertical marks: Suesada; Shōgun]—who had come up from Edo. They reported that the hollyhock (aoi) had been duly presented as in previous years, and the outcome was auspicious; the senior retainers (karō) of the Shogunate all reported that things proceeded as was customary. It was reported that the formal expression of thanks (o-rei) was made on the first day of the fourth month. Although this was before the main festival (sairei), in the current year, due to the thirteenth memorial anniversary (jūsan-kaiki) of the former Regent (zen-Shōkoku-sama) [red vertical mark], it was reported that [the Shogun] would be making a visit to Nikkō [red vertical mark] around the time of the festival. Therefore, the expression of thanks was offered on the first day of the month. Following this, the reply of the tensō (Transmission Official) from that day was reported, along with the matter that the ground level (jigyō) of the o-ryōya (a designated building for the hafuri ritualists) was somewhat too high. [Red marginal note: Concerning the petition to use the Takakura Gate as the Kondō-ji Gate.] It was reported that a request would be made regarding the arrangement of laborers (ninsoku), as well as a petition to use the Takakura Gate in place of the Kondō-ji Gate. --- [Red annotation at the top of the sixth line:] Yasufusa's note: This passage may belong to a date prior to the ninth day of the third month.
