1. The third day of the same month. Clear skies. Early in the morning, Lord Gomi arrived, and ujibito — Hōken, Hokunī, Ujimori, Shūken, and five or six others — assembled. A petition (訴訟, soshō) was made requesting that Lord Gomi issue instructions to the carpenters to install railings (kōran) at Tanao Shrine, Hashimoto Shrine, and Kajita Shrine. Lord Gomi immediately consented and summoned the carpenters to convey the order. 《Interlinear note (in red): Concerning the two jars excavated from the grounds of Wakamiya Shrine.》 1. On the same day, the general local inhabitants (sō-jikabito) were in the process of excavating the ground around Shingū and Wakamiya Shrine (in preparation for the ritual moving of the shrine buildings), when two earthen jars were unearthed from below the ground, slightly to the east of the center of the western residential precinct of Wakamiya Shrine. 《Interlinear note: One was a container holding ceramic (Seto ware) objects; the other was an object the color of unglazed earthenware (kawarake).》 The entire shrine community was astonished, and a diagram was drawn to record the finding. For the shape and dimensions, see the diagram. 《Interlinear note (in red): The diary of Suefuku states: from the grounds of Wakamiya Shrine, one jar resembling a flower vase and one jar stand (壺居, tsubo-ie) were found — two items in total. This is a matter about which one ought not to make a fuss on shrine grounds (such talk of ill omen being improper). It is because the shrine officials (shashi) and ujibito are ignorant of such matters that they reacted as they did. On the twenty-ninth day, the said jar was reportedly (re-)interred at Wakamiya Shrine.》 2. The fourth day of the same month. Alternately cloudy and clear. The shrine officials and ujibito held a consultation behind Wakamiya Shrine. For details, see the daily record (hinami-ki). 3. The fifth day. A barrel of sake (taru) was sent to the master carpenters. ■ (illegible character). For further details, see the general community daily record (sōchū hinami-ki). 4. The sixth day of the same month. Clear skies. The pillars of the Shinpō-ya (divine treasures storehouse) were erected and the ridgepole-raising ceremony (mune-age, tōjōshiki) was performed. 5. The seventh day of the same month. Cloudy skies. As today is the Gion Festival (Gion-e), all master carpenters suspended their work. However, the cypress-bark roofers (hiwadashi) continued as before, thatching the Imikoya (ritual seclusion hut) and the Goheiden (sacred offerings hall), among others. 6. On the morning of the same day, a gathering was held at the Eidō (portrait hall/memorial hall). The response (of thanks) was conveyed regarding the barrel of sake sent to the carpenters the day before yesterday (the fifth). Furthermore, concerning the written list of requests (konomi no kakitsuke) recently submitted by the shrine families (shake), the carpenters pledged to fulfill every one of the requests as specified. Also, from Nishiike Mimasaka-no-kami Takatoshi, word came that His Highness the Prince had fallen ill (go-irei, a euphemism for illness among persons of high rank), but that notwithstanding— [The text continues on the following page.]
