《割書：調査に係る蓋し明治十四年火災の後に探り得たる所の新泉なり然る｜に十八年三月此地再ひ大火災に罹れり故に此諸泉中又自ら隠顕変動》

○大湯（おほゆ） 本町（ほんてう）の上手（うわて）西側（にしがわ）に在（あ）り晝夜（ちうや）各々（おの〳〵）三回（みたび）時（とき）を違（たが）へず
して湧（わ）く但（たゞ）時（とき）ありて長湧（ながわき）することあり長湧（ながわき）は概（おほむ）ね十二｜時（じ）
間（かん）とす例（たと）へば午前（ごぜん）六時に湧出（わきいづ）れば午後（ごゞ）五｜時（じ）に至（いた）りて止（や）む

現代語訳
《割書：調査によるものである。おそらく明治十四年の火災の後に掘り当てた新しい温泉である。しかし十八年三月にこの地は再び大火災に見舞われた。そのためこれらの諸泉のうち、また自然に隠れたり現れたり変動したりしたことであろう。しかし今これを詳しく調べる時間がない。しばらく以前の調査に依るのみである》
全部で二十四か所となる。この他、海岸や田園のいたるところで、わずかに深く掘れば温泉が湧き出さないところはない。将来さらにいくつの泉を増やすかも分からない。まさに熱海の名にふさわしいと言えるだろう。
○大湯 本町の上手西側にあり、昼夜それぞれ三回、時刻を違えずして湧く。ただし時として長時間湧くことがある。長湧きは概ね十二時間とする。例えば午前六時に湧き出れば午後五時に至って止む。長湧きが止めばまた十二時間長く休む。すなわち午後六時より翌日午前五時に至るまで一滴をも出さないようである。その後五、七日間湧き出の度合いが一定でなく、およそ十日を過ぎて初めて常態に復する。その湧き出る様は、初め石垣の間において蟹の目のように煮え立ち、やがて湧いて遂に沸騰するに至っては、恰も数個の大ポンプで熱湯を注ぎ出すように、二、三間離れた大石に熱湯を吐きかける。その勢いと響きは雷のようで、蒸気は雲のようで、飛び散る水しぶきが熱い雨となって近づくことができない。そのため四方数歩の地に木柵を巡らしてその危害を避けている。
聞くところでは、中国安州の潮泉は一日に三回満ち三回引き、撫州に一日三潮の泉があり、蜀に六時泉があり、滇中に百刻泉がある。またスイスのエンガディン泉は毎年五月中旬より八月中旬まで毎日午後四時より午前八時を限って湧き出し、イタリアのビラ・フリニア泉は一日三回時期を定めて湧き、フランスのコルアンにあるある温泉は毎七分間に

《Side note: According to the investigation, these are probably new hot springs discovered after the fire of Meiji 14 (1881). However, in March of Meiji 18 (1885), this area was again struck by a great fire. Therefore, among these various springs, some naturally appeared and disappeared or underwent changes. However, there is no time now to investigate this in detail, so we rely only on the previous survey》
In total there are twenty-four locations. In addition, throughout the coastal areas and fields, wherever one digs even slightly deep, hot springs will emerge without exception. It is unknowable how many more springs may be added in the future. This truly lives up to the name of Atami (Hot Ocean).
○Ōyu (Great Hot Spring): Located on the west side of the upper part of Honchō, it springs forth three times each day and night at regular intervals. However, sometimes it springs for long periods. A long eruption typically lasts twelve hours. For example, if it begins at 6 AM, it stops at 5 PM. When the long eruption stops, it rests for another twelve hours - from 6 PM until 5 AM the next day, not producing even a single drop. After that, for five to seven days the volume of eruption is irregular, and only after about ten days does it return to normal.
When it erupts, it first bubbles like crab's eyes between the stone walls, gradually building until it reaches full boiling. At that point, it is like several large pumps pouring out hot water, spraying hot water onto large rocks two to three ken (about 4-5 meters) away. The force and sound are like thunder, the steam like clouds, and the splashing water becomes hot rain that makes approach impossible. Therefore, wooden fencing is placed several steps away in all directions to avoid this danger.
I hear that in China, the tidal spring of Anzhou has three flows and three ebbs per day, in Fuzhou there is a spring with three tides per day, in Shu there is a six-hour spring, and in Yunnan there is a hundred-moment spring. Also, the Engadin spring in Switzerland erupts daily from 4 PM to 8 AM from mid-May to mid-August each year, the Villa Frinia spring in Italy erupts three times daily at set times, and a certain hot spring in Correns, France erupts every seven minutes.
