覗（のぞ）くは管（くだ）を以（もつ）て天（てん）を窺（うかゞ）ふの為（ため）にあらず
絵虚言（ゑそらごと）は面白（おもしろき）をのみとして意味（いみ）の深（ふか）ぎ
硯（すゞり）の海（うみ）より浅黄（あさき）に人情（にんじやう）の糸筋（いとすじ）を引（ひい）て操（からくつ）
たり此世界（このせかい）を見（み）る所（ところ）の目＋鏡（めかね）には紅毛（おらんだ）も
口（くち）をとぢ娼妓（おいらん）はヲヤ〳〵〳〵と袖屏風（そてひやうふ）の蝶（てふ）つがひ
戯（たは）るゝ春（はる）の若艸双紙（わかくさざうし）いさむ心（こゝろ）の駒形（こまかた）と

式亭主人が戯作の種として、筆の軸から浮世を覗くのは、管を通して天を窺うような狭い見方をするためではない。
絵空事は面白いことだけを重視して、意味が浅く、
硯の海よりも浅い黄色に人情の糸筋を引いて操っている。
この世界を見るところの眼鏡には、オランダ人も口を閉じ、花魁は「おやおやおや」と袖屏風の蝶が番う
戯れる春の若草双紙、勇む心の駒形と
来た眼鏡の趣向をご覧くださいと友達の
作品に序文を書くことである。

Picture tales focus only on what is interesting, with shallow meaning,
painting human emotions in colors more shallow than yellow from the inkstone's sea, manipulating the threads of human feeling.
In the spectacles that view this world, even the Dutch fall silent, and courtesans cry "Oh my, oh my!" as butterflies pair on sleeve screens
in playful spring wakakusa-zōshi tales, with brave hearts at Komagata—
behold this spectacle's design, as I write this preface for my friend's
work.
