【右丁 挿絵】
馬二郎はうとうとと居眠りもせず、机の置物とにらめっこをし、白木屋の番頭が着るような着物で、雁首を傾け、煙管の雁首の皮の知恵袋の底を叩いていた。竹の木締めで、いつものことながら不思議なことに、どこからともなく薄ぼんやりとした気配に、偉人が現れ出たもうとは、よく草双紙にあるやつだと、膝八丁の浅知恵で、ちょっと古手屋の八郎兵衛、うそらしいことであるが嘘ではないこと、大勢の者が親の頭に、まことにほんとうのことも、しかも青、ほんとうのことでございます以上。
〽千歳千歳、されば、これ一つ百三十六地獄、南無三に【四か】がすべりやした。そもそも我はかよう神の末社にて、生き長大通神というものなり。

〽神は見通しとは言いながら、平沢先生でも品川の見通しでも、お前さんには及びません、などと、お世辞を言うやつさ。

〽私のことをそう探られては、もろなをではないが、我ら平行平行は、最近を顧みず、はとうてと去りやす。

いかに汝、お前が不男の情なし、手なしのくせとして無性に高ぶり、いまだ世の中の人情を知らず。それ手なしといえば廓内の茶切打ち、人形芝居の徳利と心得、常に意気もせぬ悪知恵を言いたがり、汝いまだ通の深い理屈を知らず。こけの要らざる高慢に、浮世の知者を見下すこと不憫に思い、今この一つ写しを授ける。これこそ神変不思議の賜物なり。名づけて「人明鏡」という。これで照らしてみるならば、野暮天のひいき事、明細に現れるべしや。ああ疑うことなかれ。ちちんぷいぷいどよの御宝、とくとし給うぞありがたき、もう一つまけてありがたき、〆て三つありがたき。
〽なんでこのようにありがたいか これは追って申し上げるべく候。

With bamboo bindings, as always happened strangely, from somewhere in the dim haze, a great personage appeared—just like in those popular illustrated books, he thought with his shallow knee-jerk wisdom. Like old secondhand dealer Hachirōbei, it seemed false but wasn't false, and with many people and their parents' heads, it was truly genuine, moreover blue, truly genuine indeed.
〽Banzai, banzai! Therefore, this one hundred thirty-six hells, Namu-san ni [four something] has slipped down. I am from such a subsidiary shrine of the gods, what is called the Long-Living Great Penetrating God.

Listen, you! You who are unmanly and lacking in feeling, yet despite being incompetent, you become unreasonably arrogant and still don't know the ways of the world. When we say "incompetent," think of the tea-cutting performers in the pleasure quarters or the sake flasks in puppet theater. You constantly want to spout worthless cunning, not yet knowing the deep reasoning of sophistication. In your unnecessary arrogance like moss, you look down upon the wise of this floating world. Pitying this, I now bestow upon you this one mirror. This is truly a divine and mysterious gift. It is called the "Human Clear Mirror." If you illuminate with this, the favoritism of the unsophisticated will be clearly revealed. Ah, doubt not! Chin-chin-pui-pui, this divine treasure—receive it gratefully! One more for free, that's grateful! In total, three gratitudes!
