現代語訳
そして皆々続けて、凡天の立った家を直ちに打ち壊せと叫んで先頭に立てば、皆一同に進んで行った。凡天がやがて坂本の宿に着くと、清水屋清助・助八の二軒を火と水のように打ち毀し、鬨の声の勢いを上げて帰って人数を見れば、二百余人になっていた。件の凡天を先頭に立てて「残らず出よ、出ない者があれば打ち潰すぞ、火を付けて焼き払うぞ」と口々に罵って、半分は臼井に上り、半分は入山出ぞ越に向かった。
さて軽井沢には江戸の御役人が碓井峠の御普請のために御旅館を設けていたので、特に騒ぎもせず、町内残らず出よと大勢で一同しない者があれば火を掛けるぞと呼び通った。沓掛・追分・小田井までは、ただ役元へ掛け合って「米百文につき一升五合、挽割二升五合、搗麦三升、皮麦五升ずつに売り申すべき由」印形を取って穏便に通り過ぎた。

And everyone continued, shouting "Immediately destroy the houses where banners are erected!" As they took the lead, all advanced together. When the banner procession eventually reached Sakamoto post station, they destroyed two establishments - Shimizuya Seisuke and Sukehachi - like fire and water, raised victory cries with great momentum, and upon returning to count their numbers, found they had grown to over two hundred people. With the aforementioned banner at the front, they shouted from all sides, "Everyone come out! Those who don't come out will be destroyed, we'll set fires and burn everything down!" Half went up to Usui, and half headed toward Iriyama and Dezo Pass.
Now, in Karuizawa, Edo officials had established lodgings for the construction work on Usui Pass, so there was no particular disturbance. They simply called out through the town, "Everyone in town come out!" threatening that those who didn't join them would have their houses set on fire. Through Kutsukake, Oiwake, and up to Odai, they simply negotiated with the local authorities, obtaining written agreements that rice would be sold at 1.5 go per 100 mon, cracked grain at 2.5 go, hulled barley at 3 go, and unhulled barley at 5 go, and passed through peacefully.
