Staggering about drunkenly and being cursed at, in that very gap, the riotous crowd rushed across — "The vanguard of the lead charge: Seta no Tenjō, Mutai no Kōin, Namu-sama, the legitimate heir of Genbo, Sōdō no Shirō Takae!" — so they cried out, which was truly admirable. Thus, on this side, thinking they must not be reduced to nothing by this great force bearing down upon them, they tried to shame the crowd by pressing their advantage — but each and every one fell silent and said nothing. Now, in Nozawa, Fujiya Shōbei, Sumiya Jingōrō, Izumiya Yazaemon, and Yanaba Shichizaemon had made preparations in advance. Not only their gold, silver, rice, and money, but also their clothing, various tools, household goods, and other precious belongings were entrusted to various locations. The decorative fittings of doors, shoji screens, and fusuma sliding doors inlaid with gold and silver were hidden inside their shops, with straw and firewood piled over them. Thinking that even the most lawless men would not dare to intrude upon temples, they carried their most precious valuables to Kondaiji and Yakushiji temples, placed them in the storehouses, and were now at ease. From this point on, they made prior arrangements as to how to respond should the riot come: if a large crowd pressed in, they would use roof stones as projectiles, or shoot them down with firearms, and so people went to Minamakido to sharpen their ancestors' rust-covered spears...
