They threw everything into the river with loud splashes, turning it into a river of brocade. They removed the hidden sliding doors, Chinese paper, straw, and firewood, and wielding mallets and sledgehammers, struck from above, scattering and smashing everything to smithereens until not even five inches remained intact, instantly reducing it all to nothing. The swords and short swords held as pawned items had their scabbards broken open, and even the gold and silver fittings, ray skin, and menuki ornaments were seized and carried off, leaving only the bare blades in hand. The elevated areas within the estate were dug up like wild boar rooting, and the entire vast estate was excavated from corner to corner,
as if it had been plowed like a field. Without anyone saying so explicitly, word spread that all the household goods had been entrusted to temples, so they immediately rushed to Kontai Temple. Sixty thousand people, as determined, pressed forward, parading in front of the Jishu sect temple and cavorting about with the steps of dancing nenbutsu, creating quite a commotion. The head priest Uchibushi was away in Edo, and the retired priest and Kan Temple clergy had also traveled to distant places. A newly tonsured lay monk who had recently shaved his head came forward - what could he possibly devise? Though a monk, he had not abandoned his secular nature, and declared in a loud voice: "This temple was established by the will of Gongen-ko, and was the first Purple Cloud temple founded by the patriarch Ippen Shonin..."
