"What sort of outrage is this against a sacred hall? Withdraw at once!" he shouted. From among the great crowd, a man who appeared calm and composed came running forward, saying: "Not so fast. Reverend, we lay no blame on the resident priest, but there is no doubt that you have stored away the goods from Kadoya and Yanaba. Hand them over peacefully and all will be well — but if it comes to a confrontation, we will not let this place off as a mere temple. As for you monks, we'll let none of you speak — we'll smash you all from one end to the other. What say you?" The monk grew greatly angered and replied: "What unreasonable people you are! The head priest is away in Edo, the retired priest and the kan-ji supervisor have gone to distant places on business, and only this attendant monk remains here. I have no recollection of having stored goods from Kadoya or Yanaba." Though the monk tried to justify himself, it was a situation where even if so much as a teacup had gone missing, his excuses would not hold. Before he could finish speaking, the mob cried: "Everyone, rush in! Seize that monk and make him confess! Beat him down!" The crowd surged forward, kicking and stomping and beating him. "Now then — did you take custody of the goods or not? Speak the truth! Are you going to be stubborn about it?" They pressed on the monk's head so hard it seemed they might split it like an eggplant, until finally he cried: "Ah, very well then, I'll tell you, I'll tell you! It is certain that I did store them..."
