They smashed through doors and sliding screens, cut down the eave pillars, tied straw ropes around them and pulled them down. They made outrageous demands, telling even sword-bearing people to carry ceremonial staffs (bonton), trampled over Hanazakurai in two or three places, and just as blossoms scatter in a storm, they made their merry way toward Shimoneri.
In Shimoneri, Kinouchi Zenbei had possessed several thousand ryō in old gold coins and new gold coins for many years, being a man of great wealth. He too had heard about the situation in the Nozawa area, came out to the village boundary to meet them, and waited having prepared food distribution. Thinking that should anyone request money, it would be shameful to say he had none, he placed three hundred ryō in new gold in a chest and set it out in the sitting room. He stored his remaining money and household treasures in an underground storehouse and waited.
However, a large group of ruffians came in, scattered food about as they ate, and a band of villains who had arranged this plan in advance immediately rose up, kicked over the dining trays and bowls, smashed down doors, sliding screens, and decorative paper screens wherever they encountered them, and ran rampant. Every member of the household fled without exception. They smashed open the money chests, clothing trunks, and boxes, broke everything apart, even broke into the underground storehouse, and took every last piece of gold they could find.
