Here at Kurihara and Narahara, they searched everywhere through Kitaaiki and Minamiaiki, and since Mikawa was narrow, they went around through Umagoshi to Ochiai. At the riverside below, and in the wealthy mountain villages of Azusayama and Akiyama, no houses could be seen, which was a sorrowful sight. In the deep mountains, local people begged for even a mouthful of food, but there were too many people seeking charity. Even in Hinokizawa, Kawahira, and Hirose, the world had become constrained, and as they crossed over the mountains and fields, all the food at Ashiita Bridge had been completely buried. At Kaiguchi, there was no room to sit, and at Kaijiri, both rice and millet had withered away, turning into pine groves. They resented those in Fukuyama who hoarded grain by buying it up, and at Yanaike, it was as if many mouths were locked shut. Beloved children and wives were all left behind as people fled to Nishiumanagare. They wondered if hell existed in this world, but whether this was true or false remained unclear. At Honmagawa and Honma, here at Miyanoshita and various temples, people lay collapsed. This too must be the result of past karma. At Gokashinden, young children wandered around Umagoshi crying and screaming in search of their mothers. The thickets where children were abandoned became Oishi, and the thickets where people abandoned themselves became part of this merciless world.
