どこへ行とも宿岩て出るを勝間と北川
やめくらの父母を引連て田小屋におり
て穂を拾ひ下を（小）田切て父にやり中小田切て
母にやり上小田切て我かつみてかたへの寺に
立寄て諒に湯原も一時とのどをぬらして
体らひけるあるじの住見給て
詞 先程も盲目なり迚夫の手を引
はたち計りの女房物を乞て行しが
誠のもうもくにては有まじと疑かわ
れし折柄に亦両親の盲目成を引連￣レ
現代語訳
ならいをよくして待っていれば、八郡で砂糖や飴を買ってかかあ（女房）がもうすぐ来るから泣くな、だますつもりで逃げてしまったその口を待ち続けているが、佐口では助けを求める声が上がった。上畑はもちろん、中畑もいっそのこと下畑も大久保も、高町でも在郷でも、やっと十二、三歳で後に残された子たちは、今頃はさぞや嘆いていることだろうと、村々を思いながら、どこへ行っても泊めてもらえず、追い出されるのを勝間と北川でも経験した。
盲目の父母を引き連れて田小屋に降りて穂を拾い、下小田切では父に与え、中小田切では母に与え、上小田切では自分が食べて、かたわらの寺に立ち寄って、湯原でも束の間のどを潤し、体を休めた。その寺の住職が見ていて、
言葉 「先ほどもここに盲目だと言って夫の手を引いた二十歳ばかりの女房が物を乞いながら行きましたが、本当の盲目ではあるまいと疑っておりましたところ、また今度は両親が盲目だということで引き連れて来られた。

If one behaved well and waited, they were told "I'll buy sugar and candy in the eight districts, your wife is coming soon, so don't cry"—and so people were deceived and abandoned, left waiting for those who had already fled. At Saguchi, cries for help arose. Whether in Upper Hatake, Middle Hatake, or Lower Hatake, in Ōkubo, in Takamachi, or in the countryside, those who were left behind at only twelve or thirteen years of age must surely be grieving in their villages even now. No matter where they went, they could find no lodging and were turned away—this was the experience at Katsuma and Kitagawa as well.
Leading blind parents by the hand, they descended to a field hut to glean fallen grain. In Lower Odagiri, they gave grain to the father; in Middle Odagiri, to the mother; in Upper Odagiri, they ate their own portion. Stopping at a nearby temple, even at Yuhara, they managed to wet their throats for a brief moment and rest their weary bodies. The temple's abbot watched this and spoke:
[His words:] "Just a short while ago, a woman of about twenty, claiming to be blind, led her husband by the hand and passed through here begging for food. I suspected she was not truly blind. And now, once again, someone has come leading both parents who are said to be blind—"
