生力とは動植物の生活運営を主管する力である。その物たる本原は実にまだ究明し識別することができないけれども、ただその作用に基づいてこれを言うのみである。ちょうどかの引力も親和力もその本原は推測することができないのと同様である（注：ハルトマン（人名）によれば、生力の本原は万物が共に具えている張力・縮力のみである。故に諸運動は皆この両力の作用に他ならないという。その議論は精密で取るべきものに似ているけれども、また未だ全く信じることのできない所があるゆえに、今これを採用しない）。
