現代語訳
（緒方）公は、資質が寛厚で学術が深遠であり、生徒を教えることを諄々として倦むことがない。そのため千里の道を遠しとせず書物を背負って門下に入門する者が、足跡を接するほど多く、実に我が学界の一大家である。
先に公が江戸に遊学に来られた時、私の祖父である榛斎先生が、ちょうど『名物考補遺』を著していた。公の学問が優秀で算数にも長けていることを知り、新しい度量衡制度の校正を託した。公は欣然として命を受け、多くの書籍を参考にして朝夕勤勉に努め、ついに完成させた。このことはすでに『補遺』に記載されている。
この『病学通論』もまた祖父がかつて嘱託したものであり、公は再びその志を継ぎ、講習の余暇には必ずこれを修めて措かなかった。公が平生翻訳した書物で、完成して帙をなしたものは数十部あるが、まだ敢えて開版して世に問うことはしなかった。この書が成ると、まずこれを刻して梓に上し、先達・先師の志を果たしてから、その後に他の書に及ぼそうとした。その一心に師恩を忘れず、忠誠篤実であることは、何と感動的なことであろうか。
そもそもこの書の要点は、人体の機能と器官の働きを観察し、病理がなぜそうなるかということを究明し、様々な病気のメカニズムを審らかにすることにある。これらはすべて実証的観察という一つの方法に帰結する。病学の書が我が国に出ること、実にこれを以て嚆矢とする。ここにおいて西洋医学の諸分野が初めて備わり整ったのである。その功績は偉大ではないだろうか。
文体が精確で叙述が明晰なことは、世の共に知るところであり、私が言うまでもない。ああ、もし祖父がまだ存命であったなら、手を打って嘆賞すること果たしていかばかりであっただろうか。感激し追慕の余り、恭しく代わってその喜びを記すこと、このようである。

Master (Ogata) possesses a generous and magnanimous nature with profound scholarship, and teaches his students earnestly without tiring. Therefore, those who travel a thousand ri carrying their books to become his disciples are so numerous their footsteps connect - he is truly a great master of our scholarly community.
Previously, when the Master came to study in Edo, my grandfather, Master Shinsai, was composing the "Supplement to the Study of Natural Products." Knowing that the Master excelled in learning and was also skilled in mathematics, he entrusted him with the task of proofreading the new system of weights and measures. The Master gladly accepted this commission, consulted numerous texts, worked diligently day and night, and completed the task, which has already been recorded in the Supplement.
This book (General Principles of Pathology) was also something my grandfather had once commissioned, and the Master again inherited his will, and during breaks from his lectures, he invariably worked on it without fail. Among the books the Master has translated throughout his life, those completed and bound number several dozen volumes, yet he has not dared to publish them to present to the world. When this book was completed, he first had it carved and printed, intending to fulfill the aspirations of his predecessors and teachers before proceeding to his other works. His single-minded devotion to not forgetting his teachers' kindness, his loyal sincerity and honesty - how moving this is!
Now, the essence of this book lies in observing the functions and capabilities of the human body's organs and investigating why pathological conditions occur as they do, and in examining the mechanisms of various diseases. All of these return to the single method of empirical observation. For books on pathology to appear in our country, this truly serves as the beginning. Here, the various fields of Western medicine are for the first time complete and organized. Is not this achievement truly great?
That the literary style is precise and the narrative clear is commonly known in the world and need not await my words. Alas, if my grandfather were still alive, how greatly would he applaud and praise this work! In my excitement and remembrance, I respectfully record this joy on his behalf in this manner.
