せはき庭ならハ大概相計て木を

狭い庭ならば大体相応に計って木を植えるべきである。地形は高低なく石なく堅からず用意すべきである。庭作りを整えずまして後に木を立てれば庭を損することがある。よって凡そ庭作りはよき程度にして先ず木を植えるべきである。
一 懸樹の事
正式な懸とは桜・柳・鶏冠木・松である。木の間は二丈二、三尺まで植えてもよい。昔は

If it is a narrow garden, one should plant trees calculating appropriately in general proportion. The terrain should be prepared without elevation differences, without stones, and not hard. If trees are planted after the garden construction is completed, it may damage the garden. Therefore, generally speaking, garden construction should be done to a good degree, and trees should be planted first.
1. Regarding Suspension Trees (Kake-gi)
The formal kake consists of cherry, willow, cockscomb tree, and pine. Trees may be planted with spacing of up to 2 jō 2-3 shaku between them. In the past,

there were exceptionally wide [spacings] as well, but recently this is not done.
However, the size of trees and spacing should be calculated appropriately according to the width of the garden. For narrow gardens, trees may be planted with spacing of 1 jō 8-9 shaku between them. However, spacing less than 2 jō is outside what the rules prescribe, but even if it is merely an abbreviated arrangement, it must be planted out of necessity.
