英語訳

Last Day of the Month (Misoka): The regular meeting of elders and youth was held as usual. I (the author) was on duty. Eleventh Month — Long (大, 30-day month) 1st Day: Daily offerings (nikkyu) performed. This was the first rotation of the Hanagaeshi duty. 2nd Day: A meeting was held. Announcements were made from the assembly hall (kaisho). Matters discussed included: the ditch of Sonken's rice field and the matter of five bundles of rice; the dispute regarding the estate (ato) of Sugi Jirō of Umegasuji-machi; the dispute between Kaneyori and Hokake; whether the order of rotation among shrine priests (shashi) should be suspended; the matter of leaving it to individual discretion. A letter arrived from Edo, reporting that the party had arrived on the 20th and that all was well. Today, I was shown the Eizōdani Engi (縁起, founding legend/record of Eizōdani) for the first time. I hastily wrote it down. I intend to copy this engi again more carefully, along with the procedures for the festival ceremonies. At the beginning of the imperial capital, in the tenth month of the third year of Enryaku [784], when [the capital] was established at Nagaoka-no-sato, the consultant (sangi) Nakamochikaketaru-ki no Asomi Funamori was dispatched as an imperial envoy to announce the relocation of the capital. As this shrine [found] the present location to be too cramped, the Kadono district (Kadono-gun) was also inspected, and it being determined to be a place where the four guardian deities are in harmony (shijin-sōō), a site that will remain unchanged for all ages, [the emperor] issued an imperial command to Kokurumaru (correction visible: Dai[ben] or Migi[ben]) the Great Controller / Assistant Controller (Daihen) and Kosami to announce the relocation of the capital. This shrine [is recorded] in this engi as "the general protective deity of the land of Japan" (Nihon jinushi sō-chinjū).
