Today there was a meeting (yoriai), at which a matter was presented by a shrine parishioner (ujiko). According to the statement of Hokakane, both parties refused to come to terms, and it was deemed unnecessary to debate the rights and wrongs of the matter. Since water was being drawn from Sonken's rice field, it was ordered that Shin'emon of Okamoto-machi should offer five bundles of rice from the irrigation ditch annually, to which he replied that he was most grateful. However, he stated that since he was currently cultivating cotton (or some other crop) this year, he would comply from next year onward. To this, it was argued that if it were marginal/boundary land (tsumachi), then water should not be allowed to pass through it — this being the logical counter-argument presented. Item: Yesterday in Hiragino, a deer was killed. It was determined that a penalty fee (yasen) of approximately two kan should be paid. (Also noted: the matter concerning the succession of Suki Yojirō.) 12th Day: The morning ritual was performed as usual. Eight musicians (gakunin) were in attendance, and on this day, for the first time, bells and drums (shōko) were sounded. 13th Day: There was a meeting. An express letter (hikyaku-fudasatsu) arrived from Edo. On the twenty-eighth of last month, an audience was granted at the castle, and formal greetings were presented. Today, two men from Kibune Valley requested to present their formal respects before the Commissioner of Temples and Shrines (jisha bugyō), Lord Itakura Iwami-no-kami. When questioned, they explained in detail the long-standing dispute and particularly the content of the official ruling (gosaiky ū) of the fourth year of Kanbun (1664), along with subsequent developments. As a result, the men from Kibune Valley were told that the presentation of formal greetings would not be permitted and were expelled. It was reported that they had brought their vermillion-seal documents (goshuinjō) with them. Since their leave of departure had not been granted, they remained lodging in Edo.
