(Continued from the previous page) It was made so that even illiterate people in later generations could read it well. Next, (Ujinori) said that the carving of a "baku" (貘, a mythical beast) attached to the object called "o-makura" (御枕, sacred pillow) in the inner sanctum (御内陣) of this shrine is a great error. Perhaps someone was misled by the term "pillow" (枕) and added it, or perhaps it was done deliberately to conceal a secret. The fundamental nature (of this object) relates to the Three Sacred Regalia (三種神器), and the "pillow" represents the jewel (玉, the curved jewel/magatama). Among all the shrines throughout the land, this shrine alone is said to enshrine a complete set of the Three Sacred Regalia. In ancient times, this sacred mirror [red ink annotation: o-makura, kaketsuno o-makura] — the three types combined — had a stand beneath them, a stand in the shape of the kana character "ku" (く). It appears that a "hire" (領布, a type of ceremonial scarf) was attached. As for the dimensions, each successive master of shrine-moving ceremonies (遷宮師) measured by placing their elbow on the tatami and— [Interlinear red ink annotation] Kiyoshige states: The theory of the "Three Sacred Regalia" and the theory of a "ku"-shaped stand are both mistaken views. There is a separate reference document (勘物) in which this has been noted. —spreading the thumb and index finger upright, which forms the shape of the character "ku" (く). Where exactly the "hire" is attached is unclear, but it is placed on this stand. This is said to be recorded in detail in the old records of the Mori family. The 7th day: A sudden storm (夕立) occurred before dawn, causing a great flood; damage from flooding was reported in various places. The shrine precinct was unharmed. It is said that two sake merchant workers in Kyoto were swept away and drowned. As a result, the shrine attendants (神人) from Nishikamo did not come. The letter delivered to Genbansuke at the Taguchi meeting hall (田口会所) reads as follows: "Given these circumstances, it would be impossible for the shrine attendants to cross the river. Please wait for a short while. Should they absolutely fail to attend, we shall consult on the matter and determine an alternative course of action."
