(Continued from previous page) Despite having previously prohibited touch at the jitte (十手), now when the shrine chief comes to serve, the gate is opened for passage—what manner of regulation is this? he demanded. Not a single person offered a reply.
The remaining shrine officials (社司) all took their seats in a single row on the uchiita (打板, wooden floor boards), each with one round rush mat (円座), each in their designated position. Suehiro, the former official (前官) Matsusanmi Okihisa, the non-serving official (非職) Chiyo (son of Yorihisa), and the three of Suikan—these persons took their seats on the west side of the long hall (長床) in front of Hajio Shrine. The official inspector (奉行) and his associate (同心) from the public authority (公儀) took their seats on the west side of the long hall in front of the North Wakamiya Shrine, behind the former official. The construction superintendent (作所奉行) took his seat inside the middle gate (中門) behind the screen (屏), and declared, "Let us begin."
At that moment, the head master carpenter (正棟梁), Sakubei, climbed up onto the roof (wearing court cap and robe, 衣冠). The chief foreman (正の長) took position at the base of the east pillar (represented by someone from the capital, Kyoto), and at the base of the west pillar stood Sasuké-ko and Nagatyō.
Next, the head carpenter (正大工), wearing formal court dress (束帯) with a brocade knee pad (布の膝突き) and holding a ceremonial baton (笏), performed three prostrations. With each prostration, the mallets at the bases of both pillars were struck once simultaneously. Next, holding the five-colored paper offerings (五色の幣), he waved them left, right, and left, performing three prostrations, with one strike of the ridgepole mallet for each prostration. After that, a shimenawa (sacred rope, here described as fabric) was drawn out from the center of the ridgepole of the roof and laid in position; passing through the gap between the outstretched fine cords and the ritual sand mounds (立砂), it was led to the pillar on the east side of the middle gate, where an additional ceremonial pole (幕串) had been placed. The binding that had been tied to this was untied by the head carpenter and handed to the shrine chief. The shrine chief, remaining seated, received it in his left hand...
