(Continued from previous page) With a demeanor of reverence toward the divine presence, and thereafter from the head priest (正禰宜) down to the tutelary deity's celebrant (氏神の祝), each in turn took it in hand; all while remaining seated, with a spirit of celebration, passed it on to the head carpenter (正大工). Next, the public authority inspector (奉行) Takebei, Kanbei, and these two men also approached near the ritual sand mounds (立砂), took it in hand, showed a manner of celebration, and then withdrew. After that, the clan members (氏人) each in turn took it in hand and showed a similar manner of celebration. The shrine officials (社司) took their seats in two rows along the open corridor (透廊, sukiro), with the shrine chief (神主) alone seated at the head position in the center-north. Each person used one round rush mat (円座). Next, the ritual food offerings (御料) were presented on the following evening. (The morning offerings were presented at the Hour of the Dragon [approximately 8 a.m.] by the substitute of the Kataoka priest [片岡禰宜] and likewise by Hisashi, who held the celebrant post [祝職].) At the time of the norito (祝詞, ritual prayers), since the prayers were to be recited at the foot of the steps of the auxiliary shrine hall (権殿), it was communicated via the western sliding board (すべり板, a section of the corridor floor) that the Gantayū (願大夫) should be informed. The shrine chief and all the shrine officials prostrated themselves, and the clapping of hands (柏手) proceeded as usual. Next, within the precinct of the tower gate (楼門), another ceremony of the adze-starting ritual (釿始, chōna hajime) was performed on the stone steps. The head carpenter (正大工), Uemon, Hamakō, Sasuke, and Sakubei—three persons in all—performed this according to the procedures established on the fourth day of the New Year, following precedent as customary. Next, the shrine officials and clan members (氏人) took their seats in the御所屋 (Gosho-ya, the official hall), arranged in two east-west rows extending to the veranda (縁)...
