(Continued from the previous page) —and inspected the interior. After viewing it, they departed as-is, while the head priest and others waited below the stepping stones. Next, the party proceeded to Sawada, where the Master Carpenter (sei-daiku) offered his formal greetings in the vicinity of the site of the old pagoda. Then, to the west of Sawada, more than one hundred ujibito (shrine parishioners/hereditary attendants) of all ages, young and old, lined up in two rows facing east and west, dressed [as noted in interlinear notation] in hunting jackets (kariginu), hitatare (formal court costume), and jōe (white ceremonial robes). The head priest stated that all members of the shrine families had come out without exception to offer their respects, as it was such an honor. No particular response was given, but one of the elder members offered a bow, saying, "We are deeply grateful." At that point, Lord Echizen-no-kami remarked: "Do not be scheming mischief — it is entirely natural that you should feel honored."
Next, crossing Kataoka Bridge from Iwamoto Shrine, the party passed through the Middle Gate (chūmon) and across the small garden, ascending to the great raised floor (ō-yuka) of the Main Hall (Seiden). At that point, Nakai Mondo opened the doors and inspected the inner sanctuary (naijin), remarking that it was admirable that the household of the Master Carpenter had received and maintained the transmission of the great and profound secrets of the "kiyokanna" (sacred plane) and the "kirito" (cutting door), and that these had been carried out in this manner.
Next, the party made a circuit of the Secondary Shrine (Gonden), though the interior furnishings were not inspected. They then ascended to the O-fuda-ya (the hall for shrine talismans), where they viewed the painting of the Thirty-six Poetry Immortals (kasen) that was hanging there at the time. It was then proposed that sake be offered to the guests, but not even a small measure was accepted. The party then exited through the Middle Gate and entered the Shōjinji (temple) from the Second Torii, where they opened their tea and boxed lunches. In the meantime, the shrine priests and ujibito returned home for their midday meal, or waited in the vicinity of the riding ground (baba).
